Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Activities in Temporary Shelters
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has supported Phase 2 of COERR’s Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Program for Displaced People from Myanmar residing in 9 temporary shelters in Thailand, from September 2024 to March 2025. Various disaster risk reduction training sessions were provided to emergency response/emergency preparedness (ER/EP) team, numbering 277 persons, comprising of camp committees, section leaders and camp security guards. Additionally, COERR’s camp-based refugee staff and youth also participated in these DRR training sessions, making up a total of 487 participants.

The disaster risk reduction (DRR) training sessions included prevention and preparedness of fire incident, flash flood, landslide, evacuation drill, hazard map preparation, community-based rain gauge or DIY rain gauge making using local materials, basic first aid training sessions, etc. After the training, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided financial support for the construction of 33 mini-fire stations and water wells as well as fire-fighting equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire beaters, fire buckets, etc.

For the prevention and preparedness of fire incident in this summer, particularly during January-March 2025, each emergency response/emergency preparedness (ER/EP) team took a lead on building firebreaks around the temporary shelter with good collaboration of community representatives and youth.
